IODINE DEFICIENCY IN DIET LEADS TO GOITRE
- During the low levels of T3 and T4 the hormones TRH and TSH are released.
- The TSH binds to TSH receptor on basal membrane of Follicular cell and results in the formation of raw materials for thyroid hormone synthesis.
- The raw materials can be converted to T3 and T4 only when reaction with iodine is done.
- But as the iodine is deficit, so this substances will get accumulated in the colloid .
- The T3 and T4 levels will be continuously low in blood which will result in continuous synthesis of raw materials and their accumulation.
- Thus, iodine deficiency in diet leads to goitre
