Excess use of Barbiturates causes Anemia
- Barbiturates are sedative hypnotics which causes CNS depression.
- Excessive use of barbiturate need to catabolize or metabolize this
- drug in our body Otherwise it can lead to toxicity of drug
- barbiturate drugs Metabolized / Catabolized By Cytochrome P450
- it is an Enzyme
- this enzyme needs Haem as Cofactor
- Drugs like barbiturates induce Haem synthesis.
- Use of haem here leads to haem deficiency towards heamoglobin
- So decresed amount of normal erythrocytes
- Therefore decrease normal haemoglobin level in erythrocytes
- It leads to decrease oxygen carrying capacity of blood
- Barbiturates negatively impact the bone marrow’s ability to
- fulfill its role in erythrocyte production.
- It leads anaemia in person which use excessive amount of barbiturate
- Healthcare professionals measure haemoglobin Level and blood cell count of patients Before use of barbiturate as anesthetic drug
- Excessive use of barbiturates can lead to aplastic anemia and megaloblastic anemia in some cases.
- Aplastic Anemia – Barbiturates, particularly phenobarbital, have been linked to bone marrow suppression, which can lead to aplastic anemia.
- Megaloblastic Anemia – Long-term barbiturate use can interfere with folate metabolism, leading to a deficiency. This results in megaloblastic anemia, where red blood cells become abnormally large .
